Comprehensive new EU and national regulation of PFAS for both the environment and foodstuffs is developing at a fast pace. EFSA’s (EU food agency) TWI (tolerable weekly intake) value for PFAS4 from 2020 has become an important driver for lower guideline/limit values. Sometimes these new limit values may even be close to background levels given the widespread use of PFAS. Much is still unknown regarding PFAS exposure through food, water, products etc; aspects that may also be relevant in risk assessment of contaminated land. The OECD 2021 definition of PFAS and thereby "new sources" broaden the PFAS area and this definition also forms the basis for the proposed ECHA firefighting foam and “PFAS as group” bans.
